They lived on "the banks of a canal". \par Mary was the eldest of 13 children. She was a power-loom weaver and from an early age worked at Thom Lawson and Cameron carpet mills in Glasgow, which made carpets for Queen Victoria's yacht. \par The Graham's were living at 8 Catherine St. when Mary married William McAuslin, a carpet designer, in her parents home. \par Apparently "William McAuslin was a man of some means so she married out of her station. The McAuslins had a carriage." \par They had 3 children - William born 2 January 1872, Mary born 7 January 1874, and John 21 January 1876. \par "It was a morganatic marriage which meant she couldn't inherit the family money or property." \par A family story is that William (sen) died in a hunting accident around 1875. He was thought to have died in 1875 and that baby John was posthumous. This is incorrect as his death certificate shows he died on 11 March 1877 in Kelvin, Glasgow, of heart disease. \par Mary was told her husbands family would look after her. \par Mary remained in Glasgow for about 6 years after her husbands death but then emigrated with her children to New Zealand. \par They sailed from London on 28 January 1883 as assisted immigrants to Canterbury but had to be towed back to Plymouth 3 days later because of gales. They sailed again from Plymouth on 4 February 1883 and arrived at Lyttleton on 17 May 1883 with 221 immigrants. \par From Lyttleton they went to Kaiapoi where there were woollen mills \par Three years later on 24 December 1885, in Kaiapoi, Mary married Henry Styles, a labourer originally from Warwichshire. \par Henry Styles was a widower and born c1841. Henry's first wife was Emma Leonard. She died in childbirth at age 36 on 22 November 1884. The baby, Ernest Herbert, died 6 days later. Emma and Henry had 6 children including Ernest. \par (Medical):Died in Malvern Hospital, Ashburton from 115 Cox Street, Ashburton.}
