Although he is still on the 1908 Electoral Roll as a Spinner living in Cox St., Ashburton, his mother's home. \par In 1903 he is on the Electoral Roll in Napier, at Carlyle St. Woolen Operative. \par John and Ruth first lived in a rented home owned by a John Smith in Laurence Rd. The family then moved to 9 Enfield Rd. \par Jack was a great unionist which frequently got him into trouble. \par He had injured his foot when young playing football and walked with a limp. \par In the 1916 NZPO Directory, McAusland (note spelling) Jno is a Driver, of Spencer Rd, Napier. \par On 26 Nov 1917 he passed an examination to drive and have charge of any stationary engine or boiler. \par When Ruth's father died, they went to live with Ruth's mother, Sarah Robson, at the corner of Enfield & Kelsall Rd. to care for her. \par In 1918 Jack contracted influenza in the epidemic brought back by returning soldiers. It left him very weak in the lungs. He suffered 25 years of ill health as a result and at one stage developed Tuberculosis. Because of this he spent some time in the "Shelters" - open wards at Napier Hospital. This must have been after the earthquake? \par On Beatrice's Birth Certificate in 1922, John's occupation was "Fireman" (not the brigade type). He worked in the engine room of the Freezing Works at Napier Port. He also worked at North's Wood & Coal Merchants. \par He also worked with Mr Tonkins at the Faraday St electricity generators. In 1913 Napier Borough Council electricity was generated from gas engines fueled by coal gas. A Fullager diesel engine was installed in 1925. \par In the 1931 NZPO Directory, McAuslin Jno is a Fireman, of 9 Kelsall Rd, Napier. \par John was on a lighter boat at the port at the time of the Hawkes Bay earthquake. The "Home Boats" (ships from England) were too large to come into the Iron Pot wharf, so smaller lighters were used to unload them and then offload at the wharf.}
