Willie was 11. The family went to Kaiapoi to live. \par His mother remarried when Willie was 13. \par William was a spinner at the Kaiapoi Woolen Mills. \par Married Mary Anne Bradford on 6 Febuary 1892 in Ashburton. (No: 2605) \par The Ashburton Electoral Roll for 1899 has William and Mary living in Allenton, Same as his mother. \par Their first child , Emily May McAuslin, was born in Ashburton on 12 July 1892. (No: 2875) \par Second child, William Graham (Bill) McAuslin was born in 1895 in Ashburton. (No: 2935) \par Third child, Thomas Fleming McAuslin, born in Ashburton C1900. (No: 736) He was named for his maternal grandparents. \par The family moved to Napier to work in the woolen mills about 1901. At this time they lived at 45 Chaucer Rd, Napier, which is on the hill near the Botanical Gardens. \par Fourth child, Dorothy May McAuslin, was born in Napier in 1902. \par Fifth child, Ivy McAuslin, was born in Napier in 1904. \par The 1911 Hawkes Bay Electoral Roll has William McAuslin, engineer, and Mary Anne McAuslin living at 604 Elm Rd, Hastings. William worked at the butter factory in Hastings. The 1916 PO Directory has McAuslin William, Engineer at 801 Lovedale Rd, Hastings. \par William also worked at the freezing works. In 1927 his address is PakiPaki (near Hastings) and still an engineer. \par William and Mary retired to Lower Hutt. They lived in a rental house opposite the Lower Hutt railway station, next to a bakery. \par William McAuslin died on 3 January 1947. (No: 545) \par A grandson of William's, Tom Golding, states: \par "Grandfather had an electrical workshop in their Lower Hutt home where he liked to potter and build radios. He never saw or heard of a transistor but kept right up with the play in the era of valve radio until his death. \par He must have seen radio from its infancy in NZ. As a marine engineer (?) he would also in his younger days have been one of the few qualified people to understand much of the industrial use of electricity. Things changed very rapidly though from his time when electricity was generated by steam on site. \par I was too young to know him well before he died. I do remember him in his workshop one day, when grandmother came in to stir him along about something. He deliberately arced a terminal with a screwdriver to scare her away! He winked at me as grandmother dragged me out of the dangerous place. \par I do remember his scots burr and dry sense of humour. Everyone who knew him spoke well of him and all his grandchildren adored him. We were a little afraid of grandmother though, she was an advocate of the Victorian belief that castor oil was necessary to keep children healthy."}
