The GRAHAMs emigrated to Canterbur circa 1880 and lived in Kaiapoi and John worked at the woollen mill. John GRAHAM was a foreman dyer and some of his daughters were weavers. His son James was also a dyer. Isabella DYNES married Andrew PEARSON, a baker in Lurgan, Armagh in 1867. Their son William PEARSON was born in 1868 in Portadown. I don't know what happened to Andrew, but Isabella and William travelled to New Zealand on the Crusader in 1883 under the name DYNES. They settled in Ashburton where WIlliam became a coach painter and his mother ran a store. Later his mother was long-time postmistress at Cunninghams, near Feilding. She lived into her 90s. \par \par Subject: [GRAHAM] Paisley Scotland to NY Grahams \par Date: Thu, 09 Nov 2000 08:43:47 -0500 \par From: Kathy Jost-Shouse hardy@hitter.net \par To: GRAHAM-L@rootsweb.com \par I'm looking for information on David Graham and Margaret Whyte (White) who were married in Abbey Renfrew, Paisley, Scotland on Oct. 25, 1842. David and Margaret had the following children: \par Sophie 1842 \par David 1844 \par Henry 1848 \par **Margaret E. 1850 \par Margaret E. Graham married John Holton in 1876 and lived in Brooklyn, NY. After John's death, she married Carl Oscar Larson. \par Is there anyone out there with this Graham family?? I have also found an Agnes Graham buried next to John Holton in Brooklyn but have not found how she is related. \par GaryI am really crossing my fingers on this one. I was browsing the GRAHAM list archives and happened on your reply to someone and it looks as though our GRAHAMs might connect.I am tracing the family of John GRAHAM and his wife Mary (nee MILLER/MILLAR) who were married in the Abbey, Paisley in 1850.John and his wife and younger children emigrated to New Zealand in 1880 and John was a foreman dyer. His wife and older daughters were weavers. His son James became a dyer, too.Their oldest daughter Mary came out about three years later - she was widowed by then with three children. I cannot trace the brothers Hugh, Thomas and William or Margaret. Some may have stayed behind, or died young. John junior - I have no idea. All the likely Johns I have followed up here have not panned out.I am hoping your John is also mine! As you can see, the names Letitia, James and Margaret tie in. I have heaps on the family who settled here.Have we struck gold? Do you know John's mother's maiden name? Miller??My line is through Jessie Gordon GRAHAM who was my g-grandmother. Jane Lockhead GRAHAM's grand-daughter lives just around the corner from me - I found her a couple of years ago.Looks really promising!CheersPat Churchill churchll@ihug.co.nz Monday, April 08, 2002 9:41 AM \par Christchurch, NZDescendants of John Graham1 John Graham b: 1827 in Paisley, Scotland d: September 24, 1902 in Ashburton, New Zealand. +Mary Miller b: 1833 in Paisley, Scotland m: August 29, 1850 in Paisley, Scotland d: February 21, 1893 in Ashburton, New Zealand........ 2 Mary Graham b: 1851 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland d: June 4, 1950 in Malvern Hospital, Ashburton from 115 Cox Street, Ashburton............ +William McAuslin b: March 26, 1845 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland m: October 21, 1870 in Calton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland d: Bef 1885........ *2nd Husband of Mary Graham:............ +Henry Styles b: Abt 1840 in Butlers Marston, Warwickshire m: December 24, 1885 in St Bartholomews Church, Kaiapoi........ 2 John Graham b: 1853 in Paisley, Scotland........ 2 Hugh Graham b: January 6, 1857........ 2 Agnes McFarlane Graham b: October 17, 1858 in Paisley, Scotland............ +??........ *1st Husband of Agnes McFarlane Graham:............ +Robert McCallum b: 1841 in Springburn, Glasgow, Larnarkshire, Scotland m: August 25, 1892 in Ashburton, New Zealand d: December 1923 in Ashburton, New Zealand........ 2 Margaret Graham b: February 28, 1860........ 2 Thomas Graham b: February 10, 1862........ 2 Letitia Graham b: May 3, 1863 in Paisley, Scotland d: December 24, 1937 in Public Hospital, Christchurch, New Zealand from 91 Somerfield Street............ +Alexander McDougall b: October 14, 1858 in Glasgow, Hutchesontown, Lanark, Scotland m: December 20, 1880 in Kaiapoi, New Zealand d: September 21, 1945 in Christchurch, New Zealand........ 2 Jane Lochhead Graham b: December 16, 1864 in 7 Wellmeadow Street, Paisley, Scotland d: 1958 in Takapuna............ +John Edward Hartle b: 1860 in Cashel, Co Tipperary, Ireland m: July 19, 1888 in Presbyterian Church, Kaiapoi d: September 30, 1935 in Christchurch........ 2 James Graham b: January 12, 1867 in Glasgow, Scotland............ +Elise Ann (Ella) Robilliard b: January 30, 1872 in St Pierre Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands m: January 3, 1895 in Residence of Mr N G Robilliard, Kaiapoi, New Zealand. d: June 23, 1953 in Ashburton, New Zealand........ 2 Jessie Gordon Graham b: October 10, 1868 in Glasgow, Scotland d: April 26, 1923 in Christchurch, New Zealand............ +William Pearson b: 1868 in Portadown, County Armagh, Ireland m: August 31, 1893 in Ashburton, New Zealand d: August 3, 1943 in Auckland, New Zealand........ 2 William Graham b: December 29, 1870Source: Helen Jeuken; FamilySearch\'e2\'84\'a2 International Genealogical Index v4.02 British Isles, Batch number: Dates Source Call No. Type Printout Call No. Type C119586 1825-1831 1041089 Film 6901524 Film \par \pard\tx560\tx1120\tx1680\tx2240\tx2800\tx3360\tx3920\tx4480\tx5040\tx5600\tx6160\tx6720\pardirnatural\cf0 CbDThe following information is from Pat Churchill: \par \par C/bDJohn Graham was a foreman dyer and worked for Templeton's carpet factory in Glasgow. His granddaughter Norah recalls that he dyed carpets for the Sha of Persia. Templeton's were certainly at the forefront of carpet weaving. \par \par His grandson, Eric Hartle, says there was a family story that John's father was very musical and would travel about giving recitals at large houses in Scotland. \par \par John Graham and his family emigrated from Glasgow, Scotland, however it would appear wife Mary and children (Agnes, Letitia, Jane, James and Jessie) travelled at a different time to John. \par Mary and the children sailed from Greenoch on 29 Nov 1878 in the 'Loch Fyne', a 1213 ton sailing ship captained by T.H. Martin. \par They arrived in South Australia on 9 Mar 1879. (Mary is recorded as single.) \par \par Mary and the children then arrived in New Zealand on the 'Arawata' from Melbourne. The ship left Melbourne on 28 Sep 1880 and would have arrived in Lyttleton a few days later. On board were "Mrs Graham", 41 married #2758; Agnes 18, female, domestic #2759; James 10, boy #2762; Jane 12, #2761; Jessie 9, #2763; Letitia 16, domestic #2760. The numbers are consecutive and there is no mention of a John Graham on the ship. The ages are out by 3-4 years in some cases. \par It is not known what happened to the family during the 18 months between arriving in Australia and then sailing for New Zealand. \par (LDS film 0353113; source: Public Record Office of Victoria VPRS 948) \par \par John would have been about 53 when he emigrated. He settled firstly in Kaiapoi where a new woollen mill had opened in 1875 and then, after some problems, re-opened in 1878. He worked there as a foreman dyer and his son James became a dyer there also. \par There is a John Graham - dyer, living in Kaiapoi in the 1880-81 Electoral Roll. \par CbDNOTE: \par C/bDThe 1881 Census of Scotland shows John Graham, head, married, 50, yarn dyer, living at 5 Rumford Street, Barony, Lanark, Glasgow, Scotland. At the same address: John McAuslin, grandson age 6. Mary McAuslin, granddaughter age 8. Mary McAuslin, daughter, widowed, 30, cotton winder. William McAuslin, grandson, 10. Catherine McNeil, servant, unmarried, 50, general servant (domestic). \par \par He appears in the Kaiapoi rates book in 1884 as a factory employee. He owned a house and garden in Meadow Road and further land in nearby Davie Street. The Meadow Road house is still standing. \par \par At some stage he moved to Ashburton - he is listed in the 1887-88 edition of Wises living in Ashburton - and it was here that John's wife Mary nee Miller, died in 1893 at the age of 60. John died about 9 years later aged about 75 at Moore Street, Ashburton, the home of his daughter Jessie Gordon nee Graham and son-in-law William Pearson. \par \par His will references are 1904/1019 1904/829. E/A filed 7 March 1904. Relatives known. According to the NZ Probate records. John died intestate with letters of administration and probate filed in Wellington on 5 March 1904. (8752, National Archives). \par When John died his surviving children were listed as Mary, John, Agnes, Letitia, Jane, James and Jessie. Other children whose names have been gleaned from the IGI were Hugh, Margaret, Thomas and William. Most were christened at Paisley Abbey. The 1861 Census shows them living at Causy Street in Paisley. However between 1867 and 1870, Three were christened at Calton. This is probably the period when John was working at Templetons. The 1871 Census shows them living at 6-8 Catherine Street, Calton. \par \par Agnes, Letitia, James, Jane and Jessie were the children who came to New Zealand with their mother. Hugh, Thomas, Margaret and William had all died as young children. John junior had married and emigrated to Australia with his family in 1878 on the 'Tyburnian'. Mary had married William McAuslin in Glasgow 10 years before her parents emigrated. \par \par A review of the prevailing life and times in Paisley perhaps sheds some light on why John Graham decided to emigrate. \par The population of Paisley Abbey Parish alone by 1830 was over 26,000 and growing. Before 1800 Paisley was concerned with linen and wool, and weaving was a cottage industry. Hargreaves' Spinning Jenny was invented in 1764 followed by Arkwrights water frame. Arkwright visited Paisley in 1783 and the mills at New Lanark started the spinning and weaving of cotton in 1786. By the 1800's cotton had taken over. Trade was expanding rapidly. In 1830 Paisley was involved in the production of muslin, silk gauze, lawn, linen gauze and of course the major producer of cotton thread. This in addition to Paisley shawls in silk, soft silk and cotton. Life was considered good. \par The average weekly wage in New Lanark, which was lower than Paisley, was 9s 11d for men and 6s for women for day work and 14s 10d and 8s for piece work. Under 18s got 4s 3d and 3s 5d per week. In 1836 oatmeal was 2s 6d a stone, a loaf 9d, cheese 7d, eggs 9d a dozen, butter 1s 1d, beef 4d to 7d a lb and potatoes 5d a stone (14lb). Weavers could have meat every day, a great luxury. \par The down side was the problems of public health in a city without a great deal of sanitation. The moist atmosphere gave rise to rheumatism and pulmonary disorders. There were 61 deaths from smallpox in 1834 - not many. There was an epidemic of dysentery in 1828, 446 deaths from cholera and 140 in 1834 but deaths were mainly in the poorer districts and the weavers etc. would not have been much affected other than by the fear of infection. \par By 1861 things began to go downhill. The American revolution led to a shortage of cotton and the Nations to whom exports were made started to make their own products. By 1880 half the worlds consumption was supplied from other areas and many companies were in difficulties. John himself would have witnessed changes in his trade from when he first started work at the mill. Dying was a tedious process before 1856 and the introduction of the Analine dyes extracted from coal tar. Material, once manufactured, was bleached. This was a long process in the 18th Century when there were large bleaching fields where the cloth was laid out to be bleached by the sun.}
