A STRANGE HOUSEHOLD.
Claim for Support of Twins.
Some remarkable evidence was given to the bench at Carlton court yesterday, when Edith Louise Carah of Preston, proceeded against her husband, Augustine Joseph Carah, butcher, alleging that he had left her and their twins without means of support.
It was stated by plaintiff that early in March she had gone to Sydney on a health trip. Her husband had raised no objection but. When she returned, he had left the house where they were living and had not since contributed towards her support or that of the twins. In fact, she had not seen him from the date of her departure until in court that morning. She had been looking after a dairy, and she boarded the proprietor. For her work she and the family lived in the house rent free.
Mr Hosking (who appeared for the defense): Is not the whole cause of the trouble the fact that this dairy proprietor, Pratt, is living on the premises.
Witness: No.
Did your husband object to Pratt sitting next to you at meal times?
Mr D. Abrahams (for the plantiff): Is that a crime?
In reply to further cross-examination witness denied that she had administered castor oil to Pratt at 2 a.m. Her husband slept in the front room and she occupied a back room. Pratt had a bungalow at the rear of the house.
Mr Hosking: You dragged your husband and children to the dairy which was occupied by Pratt?
Witness: No. My husband is a heavy drinker and a cruel man to me. For nine months he did not do any work. He sold our house above our heads. He gave me £40 out of the proceeds.
Counsel for the defense said there was remarkable set of circumstances connected with the case. The furniture, which was at Pratt’s house, was the property of the defendant. His wife had gone there, taking the three children and a friend named Mrs Pinkerton. The plaintiff assisted in the dairy, and the children were also called in to help in the running of the establishment. Pratt was the tenant of the house but defendant contributed £4 10/ per week towards the upkeep. It was a most peculiar arrangement. Defendant was prepared, if allowed to take his furniture, to make a home for his wife and children without such unnecessary people as Pratt and Mrs Pinkerton being there at all. He submitted it was a ridiculous claim and must fail. When defendant’s wife was in Sydney Pratt had attempted to dictate to the children. Defendant had interfered, as naturally a father would, with the result that there had been a fight, and defendant was ordered by Pratt to leave the house. As Pratt was the tenant he had no option but to go.
Mr Abrahams: In the fight Pratt was the better man.
Defendant: He was four stone heavier than me, so it is no credit to him.
The chairman said the wife’s claim must fail, but the bench would make an order for 13/ per week for each child, with £2 in costs.
