He was born on 13 or 30 Oct 1841 at South St Giles, Middlesex. and baptised on 28 Nov 1841 at St Martins in the Fields, Westminster. The first part of his life is straighforward. In 1861 he was a General Dealers Assistant living at 73 East Street, Marylebone. By 1864 he had become a house painter, and in 1871 he was an oilman and house painter. He married Elizabeth Jane MOORE on 4 Jan 1864 at Marylebone Parish Church. George was of full age at 23 and Elizabeth a minor of 16. The wedding was witnessed by George ROBSON (his father) and Anne MOORE, who was probably a sister of Elizabeth. Together they had four children, Ernest George (b 14 Dec 1864) while they were at 3 Little Chesterfield Street, St Marylebone, Middlesex. Then they had Ada Elizabeth on 1 Dec 1866 who sadly died at the age of 2. She was followed by Edith Georgina Lizzie on 31 Aug 1869 at 8 Clarence Terrace, Kensington, Middlesex, she also died young at the age of 3. The last was William Fitzroy born on 4 Aug 1871 again in Kensington still at 8 Clarence Terrace.
</line><line>
Elizabeth Jane nee MOORE died around 1874 at St Pancras. After her death George ROBSON's life has some mystery. By 1881 through to 1901 he is missing from the UK Census. It seems that he must have met and may, or may not, have married Sarah Jane CLIFTON nee BELL in England, although evidence of the marriage has not been found. It is likely that it happened in New Zealand. He would certainly have needed someone to look after Ernest George and William Fitzroy as the would be 10 and 3 when their mother died. Sarah Jane went to New Zealand arriving at Napier on 8 Mar 1874. This was presumably after her husband Ernest CLIFTON (b ca 1840) had died. They left 2 children, Herbert J CLIFTON & Charles CLIFTON. It is clear that from family information some time between 1874 and 1877 either by seeing others lose money, or by losing it himself he went to New Zealand. Between 1877 and 1892 he had a further 9 children by Sarah Jane (BELL). Sarah died 28 Jan 1936 in Napier Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, as S J BELL? So were they actually married? It looks as though they were not.
</line><line>
It appears that George was back in England in 1892 applying for a UK Passport on 21 Jul 1892 and travelled back to Wellington NZ on 11 Oct 1893. He is stated to be single and was travelling on his own. This would back up the fact that he and Sarah Jane were not actually married despite having a large family. Is he the same George ROBSON? He would have left his wife pregnant with Eleanor Maude who was born 20 Dec 1892.
</line><line>
The next confusing part of the story comes on 4 Jun 1902 when George ROBSON marries Sarah CLIFTON in Napier, NZ. It has been often thought that Sarah Jane BELL who mar Ernest CLIFTON and Sarah CLIFTON was the same person but CLIFTON was a ROBSON after 1902 and S J BELL stayed that way until 1936. They may be two different people. Why did George marry Sarah when Sarah Jane, the mother of a large family was still alive?
</line><line>
The story finished when George died on 14 Dec 1917 at Napier, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand and was buried there on 16 Dec 1917.
</line>
</metadataxml>
